Kevin Hynes

(They/Them)

Master of Science, Psychotherapist

LIFE EXPERIENCE

Kevin is Korean American Adoptee that grew up in Plymouth, Minnesota. As a Korean adoptee, Kevin had the unique experience and learned ability to walk between two worlds, minority and majority – privileged and underprivileged. The intersectionality of their identities helped them gain an awareness about the diverse experiences of racial and ethnic minorities. Later, as they explored their genderqueer identity, these intersections came into focus even more. Their lived experiences inform their therapy and they strive to educate and demonstrate the importance of diversity, privilege, and challenging the dominant discourses when working with others.

Therapy has become a lifelong interest for Kevin, for better or worse depending on the day, and they are currently the program director of the Marriage and Family Therapy program at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. There, they teach and supervise beginning therapists and conduct research on therapy practices, working with marginalized and underserved populations, and statistical modeling that frankly ten people in the world care about. Kevin engages in their own therapy and believes that it can be a useful tool for short-term issues or a lifelong process for those not-so-simple fix things.

Kevin enjoys all of the things you’d see in a dating app profile; hanging out with friends, exercising, traveling, cooking, getting coffee, reading, and shenanigans. They also enjoy spending time with their wife and two cats, which today you might also see in a profile. However, Kevin doesn’t have any photos of fish or deer in their arms nor snapchat filtered photos. Anyways, vibes are important and that is Kevin’s vibe.

Kevin’s Client Base

As someone with marginalized identities, Kevin is particularly interested in working with others with similar identities including race, gender identity, sexual orientation, and beyond vanilla practices. They have found renewed passion working with those in transition and/or exploring their gender and sexual identities. As someone in transition, it has been highly rewarding to work with other folks and help them along as well. However, Kevin loves to meet and work with all.
Kevin works collaboratively with clients to establish their goals, their treatment plan, and how they will work together. One of their main priorities is to establish and maintain an environment conducive to clients’ growth. They aim to make sessions productive through a strong relationship and treatment practices supported by research. As a couple and family therapist, they cannot help but think and approach problems from a systemic perspective. This means, Kevin will not just focus on the client(s), but also their context, relationships, and broader systems that might impact them. Kevin believes it is important to help make clients aware that the issues often discussed are rooted in intersections of culture, lived experiences, personal and familial characteristics, and societal norms.

Kevin aims to show up as their authentic self and hopes to create a space in which clients are able to too. This might mean taking a variety of approaches or sticking with one that seems to click. Therapy together may be brief as a single issue is tackled or it may be longer as we unpack everything that might be happening. Ultimately, Kevin wants to ensure that clients are getting what they need and want.
